Born in 1966 in Guruve, Zimbabwe, Gardner followed in the footsteps of his late brother and mentor, Brighton Sango, an influential sculptor in the Shona movement, to begin sculpting at the age of 18 when he completed secondary school.

A great admirer of Brighton’s abstract style, he assisted Brighton until he started working independently as a full time sculptor in 1992. He has since gone on to sell numerous pieces for private and public exhibition such as Chapungu Sculpture Park and private buyers in Europe, the USA, and Asia.

A recognized sculptor, growing in style and personal achievement, Gardner is thought to be one of the foremost artists to emerge from this latest generation of Shona sculptors.
